Artifact: Online Course Syllabus
Reflection:
This artifact is my Online Course Syllabus from ITEC 7480. This is the outline of the syllabus that I created from my blended unit that was implemented in ITEC 7482.
Creating the Online Course Syllabus allowed me to really develop online and blended learning by really analyzing what should and should not be included in an online/blended class. I developed this artifact by researching best practices, digital content, and online collaboration tools. This artifact laid the groundwork for me to model and facilitate online and blended learning. I modeled online and blended learning in the document by creating an outline of what policies and procedures would be in place in my blended unit. I laid out how I would facilitate blended learning in the expectations sections of the syllabus. This artifact set the stage for ITEC 7481 where I developed my online units and ITEC 7482 where I implemented the syllabus and units.
The Online Course Syllabus really stretched my skills as a blended/online teacher. It really gave me the opportunity to develop, model and facilitate blended learning and digital content. I think developing the syllabus helped me to really hone in on skills that are needed to be an effective online or blended teacher. If I could change something about this artifact or experience, I would have looked at more examples of online syllabi during the development phase in order to have a better understanding of an online syllabus. When I got to the implementation phase, I realized some things worked better on paper than in reality and vice versa. I could have done a better job designing this syllabus if I would have done a little more research.
The impact of this artifact can be assessed through student learning. This article was the starting point for allowing some students at Westside Elementary School experience online learning. It opened the door for other teachers at Westside to use more blended and online learning approaches.
