Artifact:
GAPSS Review/Current Reality Part A and Part B
Reflection:
This artifact is my GAPSS Review/Current Reality. It was created in Summer 2016 for the purpose of evaluating professional learning within Westside Elementary School.
The GAPSS Review/Current Reality gave me the ability to design and implement a program evaluation to determine if the professional learning at my school deepens teacher content knowledge, improves teacher pedagogical skills, and increases student learning. Throughout the development of this artifact, I really looked at how effective professional learning was at Westside Elementary School. My findings were conclusive, that while there were many opportunities for professional development, they are not always found to be helpful. This artifact gave me the opportunity to share with my current administrators opportunities for growth in the area of professional development. I was able to design and implement professional development opportunities that helped increase student learning by focusing professional development on research based learner-centered strategies that enable teachers to increase rigor for students. This also improves teacher pedagogical skills by allowing teachers to learn more technology based strategies to help them be better teachers. The GAPSS also identified weaknesses in lack of professional development in content knowledge for teachers. Even the best teachers have room to learn in grow in their craft and knowledge. This artifact gave me the opportunity to see weaknesses that my school had when it came to professional development.
The creation of this artifact gave me great insight into opportunities for improving our professional development. It also opened up the lines of communication about professional development with my administrators. If i had this artifact to do over again, I would have gotten more points of view on the topic of professional development. In the time since this was completed, I have realized that many colleagues see professional development in a variety of ways. I plan to keep the ideas that came from this artifact up to date and continue to pursue quality professional development for myself and my colleagues.
This artifact directly impacts professional development since that is what this artifact is aimed at. Professional development in turn impacts all other areas. The impact of this artifact can be assessed by looking at current professional development vs. previous professional development. There is a distinct difference in how professional development happens and how it is received.
