Assistive Technology Implementation Plan
Reflection:
This artifact is my Assistive Technology Implementation Plan. I am a special education teacher. Assistive Technology (AT) is something I deal with on a daily basis. I still believe that teachers need to understand that AT is not giving students an advantage. It is giving them a level playing field. I have made it my goal to help teachers to better understand the need and process of AT selection and implementation.
The AT Implementation Plan allowed me to plan out how I would facilitate the use of adaptive and assistive technologies to support individual student needs. Using assistive and adaptive technologies is part of my day to day job. This plan allowed me to observe and plan specifically for one student. This project introduced me to available AT devices and technologies that I had not previously used. I worked with one student to facilitate the use of adaptive and assistive technologies. I taught the student how to use accessibility features on the iPad such as speak selection and dictation. Then I facilitated the use of the adaptive and assistive technology with him by monitoring and observing his continued use of the accessibility features on the iPad.
I have made it more of a priority to help teachers who do not deal with AT on a daily basis understand its importance. The school is responsible for providing all assistive technology that a student with a disability may require. They may get grants or special funding to cover the costs of the technology. I did like the WATI form and implementation plan templates the I used. I think they helped me to really plan out what AT I would use and why. It allowed me to fully explain why I had chosen each AT device or service that I had chosen. If I had to change something about this artifact, I would have implemented this sooner and with more students. As a Special Education teacher, I need to make sure that I am providing the most up-to-date technologies available. In this instance, the technology has been present in my school of a while. I had just not considered using some of the features as AT.
This artifact will impact student learning and professional development. The impact can be assessed through student achievement on formal and informal classroom measures. It can also be assessed through the number of teachers using AT as a regular part of their instruction for students with disabilities.
