Artifact: English Language Learner Field Experience Report
Reflection:
This artifact is my English Language Learner Field Experience Report. This was an enlightening experience. I work in a Title 1 school with a diverse population. The school as a whole is about 35% hispanic. I decided to work with some of my third grade students that I already work with on a daily basis.
While completing this artifact I was able to model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness. Students who participated with me range from low conversational level English to almost the academic level English. I used the digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs by using technology specifically designed with English Language Learners in mind. I learned several strategies that I will carry with me into lessons for ELL and non-ELL alike. This artifact allowed me to model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to enhance cultural understanding by helping individual students see their language and cultural differences as an asset rather than a deficit. This artifact inspired me not only to use digital tools to increase my students learning, but to also help my students increase global awareness. When beginning this project, students were introduced to the idea of global awareness. Now students have a better understanding of global awareness than before.
This was a great experience for me. I gained some very valuable knowledge into students who speak English as a second language. If I had this experience to do over, I would have spent more than the required time on this project. All students made great gains, however I would like to see it better sustained. If I was able to spend more time on it, the students would have gotten even more out of the experience.
This artifact impacted student achievement. It can be assessed by accessing and reviewing the Georgia Milestones results from that school year for the students that completed the experience. More specifically access and review the domain/strand associated with area and perimeter to see the full impact.
