During ITEC 7305 I learned so much about data and its uses in the classroom. During this course, the most important thing I learned is not to blame the students or even the teachers. The point of analyzing and evaluating the data is to determine the student learning problem and how to fix it. The point is not to find a finger to point at someone. Data has always intimidated me because I felt like I was going to get in trouble if students did not perform at a certain level. This class really gave me a different view of data. The second thing I learned was how important the data team is within the school. It is important for the data to analyzed in an organized way that allows for dialogue and discussion to lead to a conclusion. The third important thing I learned in this course was the importances of dialogue and listening to others point of view. When participating on a Data Team, it is important to not only hear other people’s opinions, but to truly listen to them.
The most valuable field experience in this course for me was the Data Overview. The Data Overview gave me the opportunity to really drill down into the data to myself to identify possible student learning problems and possible solutions.
I plan to continue applying what I have learned in this class through the creating of a Data team at my school. I will help them to understand the guidelines and principles that I have learned during this course. This will ensure that I will continue applying what I have learned during this course.
While implementing the ideas I have, I anticipate there will be some challenges such as people not listening to other points of view, blaming students or not valuing the data. I will use many of the tasks outlined in The Data Coach’s Guide to help the members of the Data Team get to the heart of student learning problems.
